After last Thursday’s front page story about the Rebels, the Richmond Times Dispatch followed up with a report in their Metro section yesterday, highlighting the team’s success in Washington D.C.
There was also a follow up story published online, celebrating Paul Bigstaff’s selection for the national team pool.
We want to thank the RTD for taking the time to research and report the story in some depth, and for recognizing the players’ achievements.

Richmond Times Dispatch reporters came out to Monday’s practice at Ukrop Park, where they interviewed the players and coaches, took photos and recorded some video. Wesley Hester’s story about the team made the front page of the Richmond Times Dispatch today, with Chris Young’s video embedded in the online version.
We couldn’t embed the video here, but clicking the above image will take you there.
It’s great to see the Rebels recognized by the local media, and hopefully everyone who reads the story will be impressed by what the team has achieved.

The Richmond Rebels will travel to Washington D.C. for the Street Soccer USA tournament later this week. The team, coaches and volunteers will leave from the Daily Planet on Thursday morning, and we’ll be traveling in style on the Richmond Kickers sleeper bus (pictured).
It’s a custom made vehicle which the Kickers use to travel to away games, and the team has very kindly donated use of it for the ride to and from D.C.
The team also got to practice at the soon to be opened (and very expensive and professional looking) Ukrop Park complex in Chesterfield today, which the Kickers Pro and youth teams will soon be using. Big thanks to Rob Ukrop, Jesse Myers and everyone at the Kickers for letting us use the fields.

The Richmond Rebels played a series of short scrimmages with Richmond City players this past Saturday, at the William Byrd Community House field in Oregon Hill.
Games were 4 vs 4 (one keeper and three outfield players) on a field measuring 72 feet long and 52 feet wide, with goals measuring 12 feet wide and four feet high. Coach Jym Coleman set up the field to match the dimensions of the soccer fields the Rebels will play on in the Street Soccer USA Cup in D.C. (July 31st to Aug 2nd).

The Richmond Rebels eat lunch together at the Daily Planet after every practice, and often have a guest speaker. Today the guest speaker was Thad Williamson.
Thad is a committed volunteer with the Rebels (pictured above during a practice, second from left) but also an Assistant Professor at the Jepson School of Leadership Studies, University of Richmond. He spoke to the team about leadership: What it means to be a leader, practical examples of leadership, and how being part of the Richmond Rebels is an act of leadership in itself.
